Kamakurayama is the wooded hill above the town, and for decades its signature restaurant has been this improbable roast-beef house — a dark-timber banquet room with carpet you could lose a wine glass in, waiters in white gloves, and a rolling trolley that carries the entire evening's roast to your table under a polished silver dome.

The main event is a slab of Japanese beef, aged, rested, and carved to your order with a ceremony that would be ridiculous anywhere else and is completely correct here. Sides are old-school — Yorkshire pudding, creamed spinach, roast potatoes that arrived somewhere around 1967 and never left. The wine list leans Bordeaux.

It is an intensely celebratory room. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduation dinners — the waitstaff know exactly how to handle a cake, a toast, a surprise photograph. Kids are welcome but will be kept busy with the show. You will leave quoting the place for weeks.

Why it fits Birthday

Birthday belongs here because the whole evening is a performance built around someone important at the table. The trolley stops at you; the dome comes off; everyone applauds. That is the birthday scene in its purest form.
