About Matthew's

Matthew Medure arrived in Northeast Florida in 1991 to help open the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, and opened his own restaurant in a 1920s San Marco bank building six years later. Matthew's has anchored Jacksonville's fine-dining scene ever since, holding AAA Four-Diamond status through 2025 and outlasting nearly every contemporary that opened alongside it. Medure, a repeat James Beard Best Chef: South semifinalist, built it as the city's special-occasion room, and it has stayed that.

The format is a chef's tasting menu alongside an à la carte list, in a room that treats dinner as an event. For the rest of the city's tables by occasion, see our Jacksonville dining guide.

The Kitchen

The kitchen, founded by Matthew Medure and now run day-to-day by executive chef Alexander Yim, blends classic French technique with seasonal, farm-to-table produce and sustainably sourced seafood. The dish regulars name first is the hand-made spaghetti with snow crab, a deceptively simple plate that shows the kitchen's restraint. Desserts are a genuine strength: the dark chocolate soufflé is the classic order, with a peanut-butter budino the modern foil.

Pricing is fine-dining for the market: entrées land in the high $30s and up, and a full tasting menu with wine pushes a head past $120. The cooking is precise rather than showy, which is what 28 years of Four-Diamond reviews tend to demand. The address is 2107 Hendricks Avenue, in San Marco. For the wider field, see our best fine-dining restaurants worldwide guide.

The Room

The room trades on its bones: a 1920s bank building with high ceilings, warm light and a European-supper-club feel. Sound stays conversational even when full, the lighting is low and flattering, and the tables are spaced for a private conversation rather than a packed turn. Dress is smart and jacket-optional; most diners treat it as an occasion and lean in. The banquettes are the seats regulars request, and the bar handles a quieter solo dinner.

Best for Anniversary

Book a banquette for an anniversary, because the low light, the generous spacing and the tasting-menu pace make Matthew's the city's natural special-occasion room — unhurried, polished and built to linger in. The same room works to impress clients, where the Four-Diamond pedigree and the quiet professionalism do the talking. It sits in our Jacksonville dining guide as the benchmark fine-dining table.

Not for

Not for a casual or budget night out — Matthew's is a properly formal room where a tasting menu and wine push the evening past $120 a head, with no quick, low-key version on offer.

Frequently Asked

Is Matthew's worth it?

Yes, it is widely regarded as Jacksonville's benchmark fine-dining room. Matthew Medure opened it in 1997, and it has held AAA Four-Diamond status through 2025 — a rare run for any restaurant. The cooking blends French technique with seasonal produce and sustainable seafood, with the snow-crab spaghetti and the dark chocolate soufflé the dishes to judge it by. It is a special-occasion room, priced and paced accordingly.

How do I book Matthew's?

Book through OpenTable or the restaurant's website, and reserve ahead for weekends, which fill first. Request a banquette, the seat regulars prefer, and tell them if you are marking an occasion. The dining room is in a 1920s bank building in San Marco, with the bar a good option for a quieter solo dinner. Weeknights are easier to get and just as polished.

What should I order at Matthew's?

Order the hand-made spaghetti with snow crab, the dish regulars name first, and save room for the dark chocolate soufflé or the peanut-butter budino. The kitchen runs a chef's tasting menu alongside the à la carte, which is the way to see its full range. Ask the sommelier to pair by the glass; the cooking is precise rather than showy and rewards a considered wine match.

How much does dinner at Matthew's cost?

Expect roughly $90 to $140 per person with wine. Entrées land in the high $30s and up, and the full chef's tasting menu pushes a head past $120 once wine is added. It is fine-dining pricing for the Jacksonville market, in line with the Four-Diamond rating. The set lunch and the bar offer slightly lighter ways in if you want to try the kitchen first.
