The Room
Tony Vallone opened the original Tony's in 1965 — the family-restaurant that has aged into Houston's senior power-dining institution and the city's longest-running Italian restaurant in any register. The current Greenway Plaza dining room (the family's third address) has held the format since 2003. The James Beard Foundation named Tony's an America's Classic in 2010.
The dining room is formal-Italian in the senior-American-restaurant tradition: white tablecloths, hand-painted ceiling murals, a long bar with deep leather banquettes, a private dining room for sixteen at the rear. The Vallone family — Tony's children now run the kitchen and floor — have maintained the format with deliberate continuity.
The Food
The pasta programme is hand-rolled — the agnolotti, the lasagna alla bolognese, the seasonal-rotating pappardelle. The wood-grilled bistecca and the osso buco are the secondi standards. The Tuscan-game preparations — wild boar, pheasant — are the kitchen's signature. The truffle programme runs at full Italian-restaurant intensity in season.
Wine programme is one of America's most-honored Italian lists — Wine Spectator Grand Award holder for over two decades. Cocktails are aperitivi-and-classic-cocktail-led. Service is the formal-Italian brigade book that has run at the same standard for sixty years.
Best Occasion Fit
Close a Deal: Tony's is Houston's senior power-dining address. Energy executives, oilfield-services partners, and out-of-town clients have closed deals at the same booth tables for sixty years. The Vallone family service is the quiet machinery that makes the room work.
Impress Clients: International visitors recognise Tony's name and the Vallone family pedigree as the standard against which Houston Italian fine dining is measured. The room is the working argument for what an old-school American Italian power restaurant can be.
Birthday: Birthdays at Tony's are quiet, generous, candle-on-the-cake affairs the room handles with sixty years of practice. The corner booth is the seat to request.
