The Room
Arnaldo Richards opened Picos in 1984 — Houston's longest-running serious-Mexican fine-dining destination outside the Ortega-group portfolio. The James Beard Foundation has shortlisted Richards for Best Chef Texas multiple years running. The dining room is intentionally vibrant: bright walls, hand-painted Mexican folk art, a long bar at the front.
The Texas Monthly review has held Picos on its top-Texas-restaurant rankings across multiple cycles.
The Food
The masa programme runs in-house, with tortillas pressed daily. The mole programme runs four rotating moles. The cochinita pibil, the seasonal-rotating Mexican preparations, and the brunch service handle the menu's wider draws.
Margaritas are the bar's centre. Tequila programme is one of Houston's deepest. Wine list is small, weighted toward Spanish and Mexican producers.
Best Occasion Fit
Birthday: Birthdays at Picos are warm, mole-led, mariachi-friendly affairs the room has hosted for over four decades.
First Date: The bar at Picos is one of Upper Kirby's most-reliable first-date seats.
Team Dinner: The booth tables hold ten to twelve. The family-style Mexican format scales naturally.
