About a'Bouzy

a'Bouzy is the room Shawn Virene built so Houston could drink serious Champagne without a sommelier's surcharge. The ex-Brasserie 19 general manager opened it at 2300 Westheimer Road in 2017 with more than 250 bottles of bubbly on day one; the list has since grown past 1,000 labels, priced famously close to retail. In 2018 it won Wine Program of the Year at the CultureMap Tastemaker Awards, and the bar has been Upper Kirby's celebration default ever since. For the standard we judge a room against, see our seven signs of a great restaurant.

The Kitchen

The kitchen, run by co-executive chefs Freddie Gonzaga and Jose Ruiz, cooks French-leaning American food built to drink Champagne against rather than upstage it. The anchor is the Prime Filet Au Poivre — a center-cut filet mignon with glazed baby carrot, roasted fingerling potato and peppercorn butter at $65 — flanked by a prime beef filet tartare ($32), a colossal lump-crab-and-artichoke dip ($25), and a seafood pot pie under puffed pastry ($36).

A standing raw bar, daily caviar service and saber-popped magnums give the place its theatre, but the food holds its end: starters run $14 to $32 and entrees $22 to $65, so a filet-and-bubbles dinner lands around $60 to $90 a head before the wine bill climbs. The 2018 Tastemaker wine award is the dated proof, yet the better evidence is that a list this deep stays this fairly priced — the reason regulars order a second bottle instead of one.

The Room

The Westheimer building reads loud and festive: a busy bar, a sought-after patio, frequent live music and a brunch crowd that treats Saturday like an event. It is closer to a Champagne salon than a hushed dining room — sabering, toasting and people-watching are the entertainment. Dress is smart-casual and skews dressed-up at weekends; tables turn quickly, and the patio and bar fill first. Come for the energy, not for quiet.

Best for a Birthday or Celebration

Book a'Bouzy for a birthday or any reason to pop a cork because the whole room is engineered for it — sabered Champagne, a 1,000-label list priced near retail, and a filet worth toasting over. The bar buzz and patio carry a big table, and nobody blinks at a magnum landing tableside. See our best restaurants for a birthday, the tables that impress clients, and our fine-dining guide for the wider field.

Not for

Not for a quiet, budget supper — the room runs loud and celebratory, the sparkling list is the point, and a filet-and-bubbles evening climbs past $90 a head fast.

Frequently Asked

Is a'Bouzy worth it?

Yes, if you want Champagne by the glass or bottle without a steep markup — the 1,000-label list priced near retail is the draw, and the Prime Filet Au Poivre ($65) is a proper centerpiece. The 2018 Tastemaker Wine Program award reflects that the cellar, not just the scene, is the real attraction. Treat it as a celebration and book the Houston patio.

What is a'Bouzy known for?

Champagne, first and foremost — more than 1,000 sparkling and still labels priced close to retail, plus sabering, magnums and daily caviar service. On the plate it is known for the Prime Filet Au Poivre, the prime beef filet tartare, and a lavish brunch. Shawn Virene opened it in 2017 and it won Wine Program of the Year at the 2018 CultureMap Tastemaker Awards.

Do you need a reservation at a'Bouzy?

For dinner and especially weekend brunch, yes — the bar and patio fill fast and walk-ins wait. Book through OpenTable or call 713-722-6899, and ask for the patio if the weather is kind. Larger celebration tables and the private rooms should be reserved well ahead. See the wider Houston dining guide for timing.

How much does dinner at a'Bouzy cost?

Starters run roughly $14 to $32 and entrees $22 to $65, with the Prime Filet Au Poivre topping the list at $65. Figure on $60 to $90 a head for food before wine — and the Champagne list, fairly priced as it is, can take the total anywhere you let it. Brunch and happy hour are the gentler entry points.

Is a'Bouzy good for a birthday?

Very — it is one of Houston's go-to celebration rooms. Sabered Champagne, a deep sparkling list, a festive bar and patio, and a kitchen happy to send out a filet for the table make it built for birthdays and toasts. Reserve ahead, ask about the patio or a private space for bigger groups, and expect a lively, dressed-up crowd.
