About Süllberg

Süllberg sits on the 75-metre Elbe bluff in Blankenese, the riverside residential district nine kilometres upstream from central Hamburg. The building is a late-19th-century manor-style restaurant complex with seventeen rooms, three dining rooms, and a wraparound terrace with panoramic views across the Elbe and the downstream shipping lanes. Karlheinz Hauser took the property in 2003 and brought the main fine-dining room — Restaurant Süllberg by Karlheinz Hauser — to a Michelin star in 2008, which has been held continuously.

The Michelin dining room sits on the top floor with windowed views across the Elbe; the menu is 5 or 7 courses at €180 or €240, with a la carte available in parallel. The cooking is contemporary German with a strong classical-French foundation: a langoustine tartare with a smoked-herring beurre blanc; a roast turbot with Champagne beurre and asparagus; a slow-cooked Bresse pigeon with morels and a Madeira jus; and a deep dessert programme led by a Valrhona chocolate souffle that is one of the best souffles in Germany.

Süllberg is also Hamburg's most physically dramatic restaurant location. The terrace in summer seats sixty with unimpeded river views; in winter the indoor dining room — oak panelling, a grand fireplace, leaded-glass casement windows — becomes the alternative. The upriver location means a reservation usually involves a taxi (twenty-five minutes from central Hamburg) or the S-Bahn to Blankenese (forty minutes). For a birthday or a proposal, the view-plus-star combination is the single strongest argument in the city.

Why It's Perfect for Birthday

For a Birthday: Süllberg has the single most dramatic restaurant view in Hamburg, a Michelin-starred kitchen, and private dining rooms that seat eight, twelve, or twenty with advance notice. Hauser's team is practiced at birthday service — the dessert Champagne, a quiet piano in the lobby, the view that photographs without any effort. Summer terrace, winter fireplace: the room works in every season.
