About The Bungalow
The Bungalow occupies a restored colonial villa on Church Cross Street, five doors from Amangalla and directly opposite the Fort's Dutch Reformed Church. The restaurant has, over a decade, become one of Galle Fort's most atmospheric dining rooms — a leafy garden courtyard, rustic-colonial interiors, and a kitchen turning out Sri Lankan fusion at a level that holds its own against the starrier rooms nearby.
The restaurant is two connected spaces: an indoor dining room with original teak floors, high ceilings, and antique colonial furniture, and a back garden courtyard shaded by frangipani and bougainvillea. The courtyard is the book — it seats about twenty-four at two-tops and four-tops under the pergola, with the Fort's cobblestone walls providing the setting. Capacity overall is about fifty-five.
The cooking is Sri Lankan fusion built on a serious technical base — the chef trained in Colombo and a stint in Hong Kong. Signatures include prawn tempura with papaya salad and sweet-chili dip, watermelon-feta salad, butter chicken with estate garam masala, and a Sri Lankan crab curry served with yellow rice and coconut sambol. The cocktail programme is the restaurant's quiet star: the Jungle Folly (rum, vodka, gin, malibu with cinnamon), the Drunken Lankan (arrack, coconut, grapefruit), and a rotating garden-ingredient cocktail using that day's courtyard harvest.
Service is unhurried and engaged; the brigade is small and the maître d' remembers returning guests. Reservations are recommended for weekend dinners; the courtyard books a week ahead in high season.
Why It's Perfect for First Date
The Bungalow is the first-date room for the couple who want romance-in-the-garden rather than romance-in-the-deck. The courtyard two-top under the pergola at 8 PM is the single most-romantic table in Galle Fort. For proposals, the maître d' will coordinate a private corner two-top. For birthdays, the indoor long table seats up to twelve and the kitchen will build a curry-and-cake finish with a day's notice.
