About M'AR De AR Aqueduto Restaurant
M'AR De AR Aqueduto is the dining room of the historic five-star Aqueduto hotel, set inside a sixteenth-century palace and flanked by the original Aqueduct of Sertorius which runs through the property. The garden — terraced, walled, with the aqueduct as a backdrop and candlelight on every table — is one of the most romantic outdoor dining settings in Portugal.
The cooking, under chef Diogo Pinheiro, runs modern Portuguese with a confident Alentejo bias. A short tasting menu plus a longer à la carte: aged Alentejo beef with mountain herbs, line-caught fish with regional vegetables, a celebrated black pork cheek dish that has been on the menu since the restaurant opened. Plating is contemporary; portions are precise.
The wine list is one of the strongest in Évora, with serious depth across Alentejo and Douro and a clutch of Champagne and Burgundy for the celebration occasion. Service is the most polished in the city — quiet, informed, multilingual — and the pacing of the meal in the garden is generous.
For a proposal in the garden under the aqueduct, an anniversary dinner that needs the drama of the room, or a celebration that should feel architecturally important, M'AR De AR Aqueduto is the obvious answer.
Why It Works for Proposal
The aqueduct-shadowed walled garden and candlelit terrace are among the most romantic outdoor seats in Portugal. The pacing is unhurried enough to find the right moment between courses.
