The Review
Heinz Beck is the German-born, Rome-based chef whose three-starred La Pergola is, for many critics, the single greatest Italian restaurant in the world. Social is his Dubai outpost — opened inside the Waldorf Astoria on Palm Jumeirah — and is run by executive chef Carmine Faravolo, a Neapolitan whose grandmother taught him to cook before French kitchens fine-tuned his technique.
The room is calibrated for occasion. Floor-to-ceiling glass opens onto the Arabian Gulf and a sweep of Dubai Marina skyline that competes with any in the world for romance-by-candlelight. Interiors are tailored rather than theatrical — deep upholstery, marble accents, a long curved bar where couples begin with Prosecco before being walked to their table. Service is old-Europe in the best sense: knowledgeable, discreet, capable of reading a table within seconds.
Faravolo's menu is a modern Italian procession. The five-course La Ricerca tasting (AED 550, or AED 900 with wine pairing) showcases his interpretation of peninsular cuisine through a northern-to-southern sweep: hand-cut tagliatelle with aged beef ragù; risotto Carnaroli finished with thirty-month Parmigiano and black truffle; a branzino in crosta di sale presented whole and deboned tableside; wagyu tagliata with a Taggiasca olive reduction. Desserts are the revelation — Faravolo's interpretation of tiramisu, deconstructed and rebuilt with mascarpone mousse, espresso gel and savoiardi crumble, is worth the trip alone.
Social holds a Gault & Millau toque (2023 and 2025) and is one of only a handful of Italian restaurants in the Emirates run at this standard. The wine list is deep in Italian producers — Piedmont and Tuscany are well represented, with verticals of Gaja, Sassicaia and Brunello di Montalcino — and the sommelier team is confident navigating both ends of the price spectrum.
Best for Proposal
Social is Dubai's soft-power proposal restaurant. The Gulf view, the low light, the quiet pacing of the service, and the celebratory reflex of Italian dining combine into the rare setting that feels neither try-hard nor predictable. Private-dining alcoves are available for parties of six to twelve — ideal for birthdays that want elegance over spectacle. The restaurant will discreetly arrange a cake, a bouquet, a bottle of Champagne waiting at the table. For impress-clients duty, the Chef's Table (AED 750 per person, wine pairing optional) is the trump card.
Signature Dishes
The spaghetti di Gragnano with Sicilian red prawns and bottarga is the house's purest expression of peninsular Italian cooking. Risotto Carnaroli with thirty-month Parmigiano and black truffle is the signature autumn-winter dish. The branzino in crosta di sale, presented whole and filleted tableside, is the occasion order. For dessert, Faravolo's modern tiramisu is the non-negotiable; the pistachio soufflé with vanilla crème anglaise is the quiet champion.
What to Know Before You Go
Social sits inside the Waldorf Astoria at the very tip of Palm Jumeirah East Crescent — a twenty-five-minute drive from DIFC in clear traffic. Valet parking is standard. Reservations are essential for weekends and should be made one to two weeks ahead; the Chef's Table requires 48 hours' advance notice. Dress code is smart casual, which in Waldorf vernacular means closed shoes, tailored trousers, equivalent for women — no shorts or flip-flops. Children six and older are welcomed. Book via Sevenrooms through the Waldorf Astoria website.
