The Room
Artist Alley occupies a small wooden chalet on Huynh Thuc Khang road, directly above the celebrated Hang Nga Guesthouse (the Crazy House). The room seats thirty across two floors; the upper floor's picture windows face the pine forest, and at dusk the candles and the pine-filtered light combine into one of the most atmospheric dining settings in Vietnam.
The chef, Le Quang Anh, trained in the Metropole Hanoi's French kitchens before returning home to Dalat. His menu is a proper French-Vietnamese fusion — a five- or seven-course tasting that weaves classical French technique through Vietnamese ingredients. Signatures include the pho-inspired consommé with pan-seared scallop, the pâté en croûte made with local charcuterie, and the passionfruit-and-Dalat-strawberry soufflé.
The wine list is small but thoughtful — around forty labels, roughly half French and half new-world, priced accessibly. The restaurant also makes its own fruit cordials and a small range of house-infused gins that are worth ordering as an aperitif.
Dinner runs $40 to $65 per head for the tasting menu with pairings. Reservations are essential on weekends; the room fills fast via TripAdvisor and Facebook. Request an upper-floor window table at booking.
Why It's Best for First Date
For a First Date, Artist Alley's candlelit chalet is a romantic setting without being saccharine — the pine-forest view, the small room, the chef's narrative frame around the dishes, and the confident use of local ingredients all contribute to a dinner that generates conversation rather than demanding silence. For a proposal, the upper-floor window table with the forest view is a strong alternative to the more formal grandeur of Le Rabelais.
