The Island's Only Rooftop
Coronado zoning has historically been hostile to rooftop bars. For most of the island's modern history, the combination of low building heights and conservative planning meant that the best outdoor drinks were at ground-level terraces and hotel patios, with no proper rooftop-bar tradition analogous to Los Angeles or New York. Dive, which opened on top of the Bower Hotel in 2023, is the first serious exception. It is, at the time of this writing, Coronado's only full rooftop bar and restaurant, and the view alone would be enough reason to visit.
The Bower Hotel itself is a small 38-room property on Orange Avenue that took over a previous hotel building and rebuilt it as a modern boutique concept. Dive sits on top of the Bower, four floors above the street, with 360-degree views: the Pacific Ocean to the west, San Diego Bay and the downtown skyline to the north-east, Mexico on the southern horizon, and the red-roofed Hotel del Coronado glowing just below to the south. At sunset, the view is among the best in Southern California dining, and the rooftop is packed for good reason.
The food is coastal-American casual — shareable plates, raw bar items, grilled proteins with sides — priced to suit the bar-forward business model. The bar programme is more serious than the food programme, with house cocktails, an extensive tequila and mezcal selection, and local beer. For serious dining, alternatives are better. But for a sunset drink with small plates, or for a solo evening on a Coronado rooftop with 280-degree coastal views, Dive is the only right answer. The ambience score of 9/10 reflects the setting rather than the food; the setting genuinely is that strong.
Signature Dishes
The raw bar — local oysters on the half shell, shrimp cocktail, and rotating crudo — is the correct way to anchor a bar visit. Tuna Poke Bowl with avocado, cucumber, and sesame is the signature main-plate order. The Wagyu burger is among the better bar burgers on the island. Grilled fish tacos with pickled vegetables are the casual-order standard. Desserts are minimal; visit Dive for drinks and small plates rather than a full dinner. The Palomas are better than the margaritas; the Coronado Sunset cocktail (tequila, grapefruit, mezcal rinse) is the house signature.
The Room
Dive is a true open-air rooftop: no overhead cover, no enclosed interior bar. The space is organised around a central bar with a bank of high tables on the ocean-facing side, firepits spaced along the perimeter, and a service station at the rear. Seating is first-come, first-served for walk-in bar service; tables can be reserved for dinner service. The dress code is resort-casual throughout, with layers advised after sunset as the sea breeze rolls in. Noise levels are manageable; acoustics are better than most rooftop bars because the open design lets sound dissipate upward.
Practical Information
Why Dive for Solo Dining
Solo dining in Coronado has historically been harder than it should be — the island's high-end restaurants favour two-tops and four-tops, and walk-in bar seating is inconsistent. Dive solves this problem entirely. The rooftop is designed for drop-in bar service, with plenty of counter seats and no stigma attached to eating alone. More importantly, the view renders solo dining here genuinely enjoyable: the Pacific to the west, the Hotel del Coronado below, San Diego twinkling to the north. A solo drink and small-plate dinner at Dive at golden hour, on a weekday, with the book of your choice, is among the small privileges of Coronado living. For work travellers and weekend day-trippers alike, the rooftop is the island's best solo evening.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Dive part of the Hotel del Coronado?
No. Dive is the rooftop bar of the Bower Hotel, a small independent boutique hotel on Orange Avenue. The Bower is a short walk from the Hotel del Coronado but is a separate property. Dive is open to non-hotel guests.
Is there a dress code?
Resort casual. The rooftop is informal and family-friendly during daytime, becoming more bar-oriented after 6 PM. Layers are advised for evening service.
Can I reserve a table?
Yes, for dinner service. Walk-in bar seating is first-come, first-served and is the right choice for a solo visit or sunset drinks. For a table with dedicated service, book 1–2 weeks ahead for weekends.
