The Verdict

Nihonbashi opened in 1995 — the same chef-restaurateur Dharshan Munidasa's first restaurant, 15 years before Ministry of Crab — in the Galle Face Terrace building near the Colombo 3 waterfront. The current incarnation, renovated in the mid-2010s, seats approximately 100 across a main dining room, a sushi counter (10 seats), a robata counter (6 seats), and two private dining rooms. The restaurant has been on Asia's 50 Best list and is the most consistently-recognised Japanese kitchen in South Asia.

The kitchen runs across three axes: the sushi counter (edomae-style with Sri Lankan lagoon fish for certain species, Tsukiji-Toyosu for the classical Japanese fish); the robata counter (charcoal grill — black cod with miso, wagyu sirloin, local seafood); and the main dining menu (ramen, tempura, udon, and a modest kaiseki-style tasting menu). The omakase is the specialty — LKR 18,000–25,000 per person depending on the day's fish selection.

Pricing runs LKR 10,000–18,000 per person à la carte; LKR 18,000–25,000 at the omakase counter. The sake list is the best in the country — 30-plus labels, most poured by the glass. Reservations for the sushi counter require a phone call and typically two weeks' advance notice; the main dining room works a week ahead.

Why It Works for Solo Dining

Nihonbashi is Colombo's business dinner of record when the client is Japanese, Indian, or internationally travelled — the sushi program is the strongest in South Asia, the service is patiently formal, and the counter provides the quiet structure that serious dealmaking conversations require.

Signature Dishes
