The Verdict

Ministry of Crab opened in 2011 in the restored Old Dutch Hospital — a 17th-century colonial building in Colombo Fort — under chef Dharshan Munidasa (who also runs Nihonbashi) with Sri Lankan cricket legends Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara as partners. The dining room occupies the original hospital's south wing: tiled floors, exposed brick walls, exposed ceiling trusses, open kitchen at the back. A courtyard garden seats 30 additional covers in the cooler months.

The menu is built around Sri Lankan lagoon-caught mud crab, sold by weight (0.5 kg, 1 kg, 1.5 kg, 2 kg, and occasional 2.5 kg 'Crabzilla' specimens). Preparations: garlic chili crab (the signature), pepper crab (whole black pepper crushed over the kitchen's pan-roast), curry crab, baked crab with butter, Japanese-style chili crab with dashi. Beyond crab: prawn kottu (the restaurant's take on Sri Lankan street food), clay-pot rice, and the wood-apple crème brûlée that closes most meals. The no-freezer policy means the day's crab selection depends on that morning's market.

Pricing runs USD 60–100 per person for a full meal (a 1 kg crab runs approximately USD 45–55 depending on season). The wine list is one of the strongest in South Asia — Sri Lankan arrack also features prominently — and the by-the-glass program is unusually generous for the region. Reservations are essential and open 30 days in advance; Sangakkara and Jayawardene occasionally drop by. Dinner peaks 7:30–9:30pm.

Why It Works for Birthday

Ministry of Crab is the Colombo dining reference point — Asia's 50 Best Restaurants regular since 2015, the island's most internationally recognised room, and the restaurant that visiting clients will know by name before they arrive. The cooking is built around Sri Lankan mud crab (0.5–2 kg per crab) prepared in a tight lineup of Japanese-Sri Lankan-Mediterranean styles. Team dinners work well; two-person intimate dinners are structurally harder (the sharing-crab format wants a group).
