Astrein

Astrein is Eric Werner's return to the Cologne he left when he was the youngest two-Michelin-star chef in Germany at age 29. The restaurant, which opened in 2018 in the Belgian Quarter, is consciously smaller and less formal than the rooms he came from — 26 seats, open kitchen, reclaimed oak on the walls, and a playlist that skews toward Berlin indie rather than classical.

The cooking is the reason regulars book back. Werner's technical vocabulary is two-star-trained and still shows in the precision of the plating, but the menus are deliberately looser — a hare saddle with pepper jus, a pigeon with red cabbage confit, a vegetable 'garden' course that rotates weekly. Portion sizes are generous by modern fine-dining standards; the five-course menu at €125 leaves you satisfied rather than hungry, which is increasingly rare at this level.

The wine list is thoughtful rather than comprehensive. Werner and his sommelier have built the list around producers they personally know — many small German, Austrian, and French names that do not appear in other Cologne lists. By-the-glass pairings are unusually interesting and change frequently.

The bar counter is the best seat for a solo diner in this part of the Belgisches Viertel. Werner himself often works the pass in the early service and will happily chat through the menu if you ask — a pleasure that is not available at the larger rooms in the city.

Astrein is Cologne's most comfortable first-date room for the kind of diner who has stopped finding star-restaurant formality romantic. The technique is at a Michelin-star level; the room is relaxed; the price is under €150 per head including wine; and the bar counter gives you a fallback plan if a second date goes well.
