About Arcadas

Arcadas occupies the old arcaded dining room of Quinta das Lágrimas — the 18th-century manor that legend names as the site where Prince Pedro met Inês de Castro, the doomed love story at the centre of Portuguese national myth. The restaurant sits in one of the most charged romantic landscapes in Europe, with a view across the hotel gardens to the 'Fonte dos Amores' (fountain of lovers) and the ancient olive tree said to still bear witness.

Chef Albano Lourenço — a Michelin Guide veteran and one of Portugal's most quietly respected kitchen directors — builds his tasting menus around the Chef's Garden on the property itself, where aromatic herbs, citrus, and wild watercress are grown specifically for the kitchen. The cuisine is recognisably Portuguese but refined through a French technical discipline: a carabineiro shrimp served with its own bisque and a fennel foam, a suckling pig belly glazed with port reduction, a pre-dessert of olive oil ice cream with coastal sea salt.

The wine programme is one of the most considered in central Portugal. Coimbra sits between two of the country's great wine regions — Dão to the east, Bairrada to the west — and the 700-reference list reflects that geography while stretching through the Douro, Alentejo, Burgundy, and Champagne. The house signature 'Pedro & Inês' — a blend of Alfrocheiro (for Pedro) and Touriga Nacional (for Inês) — is poured as a tribute to the legend.

Arcadas is a La Liste top-500 restaurant in the world and a long-standing Michelin Guide 'Plate' — the board that just precedes the stars. The service is quiet and unhurried; the dining room holds perhaps twenty tables and has never felt crowded even at full service. Staying at the property, in one of the garden-facing suites, turns the evening into the complete experience the chef's cooking is asking you to have.

Why It's Perfect for Proposal

For a proposal, there is no better address in central Portugal. The legend of Pedro and Inês is woven into the floorboards; the Fonte dos Amores is a three-minute walk from the table; the staff have been facilitating proposals for decades and will arrange the choreography exactly as you specify. Book a window table on the garden side for sunset. Stay the night.
