The Verdict
David's Kitchen sits on the east bank of the Ping River, a short walk from the Iron Bridge, in a converted colonial-era house that seats around 25 across two small rooms. Chef-owner David and Tae — a French-trained chef and his Thai wife — opened the restaurant in 2014 and have run a tight, ingredient-led French-Thai kitchen ever since. The menu changes seasonally but preserves a core of established signatures.
The menu runs as a prix-fixe (THB 1,950 for three courses, THB 2,450 for five) and leans French with careful Thai accents: foie gras with tamarind glaze, duck confit plated with local herbs (sawtooth coriander, culantro), rack of lamb with Chiang Mai garlic, and pan-roasted local river fish. Desserts include a Thai basil crème brûlée that has been on the menu since year one.
The wine list — short but considered — favours small-grower French labels and a handful of Australian and New Zealand bottles chosen for the climate. Service is warm and personal; David himself typically greets each table. Reservations open approximately six weeks out and fill for weekends within the first day; the OpenTable page is the functional booking channel. Dinner only, Tuesday through Saturday.
Why It Works for Proposal
David's Kitchen has been the most difficult reservation in Chiang Mai for several years running — the TripAdvisor #1 ranking that the restaurant held for an unusually long stretch produced a demand curve that hasn't quite normalised. For guests coming through Chiang Mai for the first time, it is the obvious 'best-restaurant-in-the-city' choice; for guests proposing, it is the intimate, candlelit room where everyone hopes the question will be asked.
Signature Dishes
Foie gras with tamarind glaze; duck confit with local herbs; rack of lamb; Thai basil crème brûlée.
