Michelin-recommended. Raw bar excellence at standing-room-only prices. The most democratic fine dining in Charleston. Come hungry, leave happy.

The Ordinary is precisely named — and precisely not. This is a restaurant that occupies a jaw-dropping 1927 bank building on King Street, with soaring ceilings, vaulted windows, and the hum of a room that feels like a brasserie on the best night of its life. The name is the anti-marketing: nothing about this place is ordinary.

From the people behind FIG — one of Charleston's most celebrated tables — The Ordinary arrived in 2012 with a singular focus: Southern seafood at its most honest and most excellent. The menu is built around market availability, coordinated daily with local Charleston fishermen. East Coast oysters anchor the raw bar, running from briny northern varieties to the creamy, complex bivalves of the Lowcountry. The fish chowder is an argument unto itself. The whole roasted flounder is a commitment you will not regret. American caviar makes an appearance, and it feels entirely appropriate here.

Prices are genuinely accessible by fine dining standards — this is a room where you can eat spectacularly well without the usual toll. The cocktail list is smart and creative, the wine selection skews seafood-forward with a natural wine sensibility. Service is warm, informed, and refreshingly unpretentious for a restaurant of this calibre. Reservations fill quickly; walk-ins sometimes work at the bar. Either way, this is essential Charleston.

Best Occasion Fit

Perfect for First Dates

The room does the work for you. There is enough drama — the banking hall architecture, the buzz, the spectacle of an exceptional raw bar — to carry any lull in conversation. Sharing oysters has a particular intimacy to it. You order together, you decide together, you eat from a shared plate. The price point removes the anxiety of extravagance without sacrificing any of the occasion. This is a place where a first date can feel like a genuine event without the weight of performance.

Also Great for Solo Dining

Perch at the bar — ideally right at the raw bar itself — and eat alone without the awkwardness. The activity around you is constant. The staff will talk to you if you want, leave you to your thoughts if you don't. Order a dozen oysters and a glass of Muscadet. Let the noise of a thriving dining room be your company. This is solo dining as it should be: intentional, pleasurable, entirely without apology.
