About Kappo

Kappo is the only restaurant in Portugal cooking kappo — the Japanese counter-style that sits between sushi and kaiseki — and it earned its Michelin star in the 2024 Guide, retained through 2026. Chef Tiago Penão trained at Tokyo's Hamadaya and Ginza Kojyu before returning to Lisbon to open an eight-seat counter two streets in from Cascais marina. There are no tables. Everyone sits at the cypress bar. Everything is made in front of you.

The menu is a seven-course omakase (€150) that changes daily with what the Peniche and Nazaré fishing boats land by 06:00. Portuguese ingredients — carabineiro, lavagante lobster, borrego lamb — are prepared in Japanese technique: dashi built from Azores bonito, wasabi grated fresh on shark-skin, rice polished to the 50-per-cent grade normally reserved for junmai daiginjo. The sake pairing (€75) is curated by Penão personally and leans on breweries most Portuguese sommeliers have never heard of.

The room is silent and concentrated. Penão works with two apprentices in total silence until he hands you the plate and describes it in one sentence. There is no music, no laughing two seats over, no phone use. The dress code is informal but anything loud — cologne, heels on the wood floor — is noticed.

Dinner for one runs €200–280 with sake. For Cascais regulars, this is the second booking after Fortaleza. For anyone who eats alone well, it is the first.

Why It's Perfect for Solo Dining

Solo dining is Kappo's natural format. An eight-seat counter demands individual attention; the chef's eye contact is constant; conversation is at the counter's pace, not yours. Book the middle seat, arrive twenty minutes early for a glass of sake at the bar next door, and let Penão work.
