About Home
Home is the Sommerin family's restaurant in Penarth — a coastal suburb of Cardiff, fifteen minutes south of the city centre. James Sommerin previously ran The Esplanade in the same building, earning his first Michelin star in 2019; when The Esplanade closed in 2022, the family re-opened under the current name with a broader brief and the next generation — his daughter Georgia — joining him in the kitchen.
The cooking is modern British with Welsh ingredient prioritisation. A slow-poached cod with cockle-and-laverbread chowder has been on the menu since day one. A Welsh Black beef cheek with bone-marrow crumb and red-wine jus is a year-round main. Georgia Sommerin's dessert work — a Welsh honey parfait with brown-butter crumble; a bara brith bread-and-butter pudding with a saffron crème anglaise — has been separately credited by the food press.
The wine list is credible Welsh-and-English-focused — Ancre Hill, Glyndŵr, a short Burgundy section, a handful of natural imports. Pairings for the tasting (£55) run through five glasses; bottles are priced fairly (most main reds under £70).
The dining room is small and warm — forty covers across two rooms, modest in decoration, with the Sommerins' family style visible in everything from the table settings to the unhurried pace of service. James typically works the pass; Georgia works both the kitchen and greets tables at dessert. The coastal Penarth setting is an asset after dinner — a short walk to the pier completes most evenings.
Why It's Perfect for Proposal
Home is the Cardiff-area proposal restaurant — the family-run warmth, the quiet Penarth setting, the unhurried fine dining pace and the couples-table intimacy make it the obvious room. The Sommerins will arrange a private moment on request if briefed two days out.
