About Chinchilla

Chinchilla opened in November 2017 as the rooftop addition to the Kove Collection's cluster of restaurants on the Camps Bay strip. It sits on the second floor of the Promenade building on Victoria Road, with 360-degree views taking in Lion's Head, the Twelve Apostles and the Atlantic.

It is a rooftop cafe and cocktail bar rather than a formal restaurant, built around sunset, a long drinks list and a light, sharing-led menu. Live DJs play as the sun drops.

The Kitchen

The menu is continental cafe fare with a contemporary slant: sushi and sashimi, seafood platters and crudités, toasted sandwiches and burgers, designed to graze over drinks rather than anchor a tasting-menu night. The real signature is the bar, with crafted cocktails, an extensive wine and champagne list and a deep whisky selection.

Prices reflect the rooftop address and the Camps Bay postcode, sitting at the upper-casual end, but the view does much of the work.

The Room

The draw is the rooftop itself: open-air seating, sea-facing loungers and one of the best sundowner perches in Cape Town. It is glossy, busy and social, at its best as the light turns over the Twelve Apostles.

Best for a first date

Chinchilla is made for a sunset first date or a celebratory drink with a view, sushi in hand as the DJ starts. For a full dinner nearby, compare Salsify at The Roundhouse or the rest of the Camps Bay guide.

Not for

Not for a quiet, food-first dinner or a still, intimate room: Chinchilla is a loud, DJ-driven rooftop bar where the view and cocktails lead and the kitchen plays support.
