About Fancett's

Fancett's Bistro is the most personal restaurant in Cambridge — a small, French-influenced kitchen run by chef-owner Johnnie Fancett on a quieter stretch of Mill Road, a ten-minute walk from the city centre. Fancett trained at Chez Bruce in London before returning to Cambridge to open his own room in 2022; the restaurant was added to the Michelin Guide for 2026.

The cooking is French classical with a British ingredient register. A twice-baked Montgomery cheddar soufflé has been the opener since day one. A confit duck leg with Puy lentils and a Jerusalem-artichoke purée is the autumn mainstay; a daube of beef cheek with mash and gremolata carries the winter menu. In summer, a crab-and-tarragon tagliolini shows up most weeks.

A prix-fixe lunch (£38 for three courses) is the city's best-value serious meal. The à la carte dinner runs £45–55 for three courses. The wine list is short and French-heavy — Loire whites, Rhône reds, a rotating short Burgundy section — with every bottle available by the glass through a Coravin. The dessert list runs to five options: the tarte Tatin for two is the signature.

The room fits thirty-two covers across two rooms divided by a half-height wall — both intimate, both candlelit in the evenings. Service is informed and unforced; Fancett himself typically works the pass and greets most tables. The restaurant closes Sundays and Mondays; Tuesday lunch is often the quietest serious meal of the week in Cambridge.

Why It's Perfect for Close a Deal

For a business dinner or lunch in Cambridge, Fancett's is the first reservation — small enough to feel considered, priced so a four-course lunch stays sub-£50, and run by a chef who delivers French classics without pretension. The wall-divided seating reads well as a discreet setting for a negotiation.
