About Florería Atlántico

The address is Arroyo 872, Retiro. The entrance is a flower shop — a working florist stocked with roses, foliage, and arrangement supplies that bears no indication of what lies beneath it. Walk through the shop, pull open the door of what appears to be a domestic refrigerator, and descend a staircase into Florería Atlántico: a low-ceilinged basement bar that has spent a decade ranked among the finest drinking establishments on the planet.

Tato Giovannoni, Argentina's most celebrated bartender, opened Florería in 2013 with a concept as precise as his technique: a cocktail menu organized by the national origins of the immigrants who shaped Buenos Aires between 1900 and 1920. The sections read like a history of the city — Italy, Spain, France, Poland, England, and a local section where all these influences are synthesized with native Argentine botanicals, yerba mate, and grappa. To drink through the menu is to understand how this city became what it is. Giovannoni's preparation is rigorous: house-made vermouths, fat-washed spirits, locally foraged herbs, fermented preparations that take weeks to produce.

The room itself was designed for intimacy and revelation. Brick vaulting overhead, warm amber lighting, close-set tables that make conversation feel private despite the proximity of other guests. The bar itself runs the full length of the back wall, and the bartenders work with the focused precision of kitchen cooks — weighed measurements, timer-controlled dilutions, ice cut to specific dimensions for specific preparations. This is cocktail craft treated with the seriousness the medium deserves.

The small-plates food menu is serious enough to constitute dinner: charcuterie from regional Argentine producers, ceviche prepared with Patagonian fish, a house-made brioche with cultured butter that represents better bread than many full-service restaurants in the city. Florería Atlántico has been ranked as high as 7th in the World's 50 Best Bars. It appeared again at number 46 in 2024. The flower shop above it gives nothing away.

Why Florería Atlántico is Perfect for a First Date

The entrance alone is a date. Walking someone through a flower shop and into a refrigerator door and down a staircase into one of the world's great bars produces an immediate shared experience — surprise, delight, the slight disorientation of arriving somewhere you didn't expect. This is conversation fuel before you've sat down. The cocktail menu provides another hour of material: the immigration chapters create genuine talking points, and Giovannoni's preparations are unusual enough to be discussed rather than simply consumed. The room's intimate scale and warm lighting do the rest. A first date at Florería ends with your companion telling everyone they know about the flower-shop bar in Buenos Aires.

Why Florería Atlántico Works for Solo Dining

The bar counter at Florería Atlántico is among the finest solo-dining positions in South America. The bartenders are genuine professionals who treat solo guests as the ideal audience — people who have come to pay attention, who want to understand what they're drinking, and who have the patience for conversation about technique and ingredient. Order the tasting flight, work through the immigration chapters, eat the charcuterie and the brioche, and spend two hours in a world-class bar being treated like someone who deserves the best. This is intentional solo dining at its most rewarding.

She had no idea what was inside. I watched her face when we walked through the refrigerator door. That expression — pure disbelief — was worth every penny of the Negroni that followed. The Italian chapter of the cocktail menu is extraordinary. We stayed four hours and talked about nothing that wasn't exactly right. We're going back next month.

Three hours at the bar counter. The bartender walked me through the Polish chapter — Bison Grass vodka combined with native Argentine herbs and a preparation I couldn't begin to describe but wanted to drink indefinitely. The brioche with cultured butter was absurdly good for a cocktail bar. I was alone and felt entirely at home.
