About L'Athénée Palace Restaurant

The Athénée Palace Restaurant sits inside the Athénée Palace Hilton — the Belle Époque grande dame hotel directly opposite the former Royal Palace on Revolution Square. The building opened in 1914, was the centre of Bucharest high society for decades, and has been the official state hotel since its 1997 Hilton refurbishment. The dining room — a gilded, frescoed-ceiling ballroom with tall windows looking out onto the square — is Bucharest's most architecturally grand fine-dining space.

The cooking is classical French in the proper grand-hotel tradition. The menu runs through the French fine-dining canon — foie gras au torchon, sole meunière, Châteaubriand for two, crêpes Suzette prepared table-side. The ingredient sourcing is international (French foie, Brittany lobster, Bresse chicken) with a careful Romanian supporting section. The tasting menu (seven courses, €145) is the intended sitting for a formal evening.

The wine list is serious — deep French classical coverage (Bordeaux verticals going back forty years, Burgundy coverage that covers all the main domaines, a careful Champagne page) with a meaningful Romanian premium section. The sommelier is old-school European-formal and willing to spend genuine time on a pairing conversation.

Service is formal and attentive in the hotel-dining tradition — white-gloved, table-side sauce preparation, the ceremony that is largely absent from contemporary fine dining in Bucharest. The room holds eighty across the main ballroom and a smaller private room that seats twelve. Reservations: the hotel handles dining reservations through the concierge; a week ahead is comfortable for weekend bookings.
