"The anchor of Boise's Basque Block: sheepherder cooking, lamb done three ways, and the warmth of an emigrant's home kitchen."
About Leku Ona
Opened in December 2005 by Jose Mari Artiach — born in the Basque country and an emigrant sheepherder before he was a restaurateur — Leku Ona (Basque for "good place") anchors Boise's Basque Block. The block is the heart of one of the largest Basque communities outside Europe, and Leku Ona is its dining room, with a bar, restaurant and small hotel under one roof.
The cooking is the real thing: the hearty, lamb-forward country food of the Pyrenees, served with the generosity of a family table.
The Kitchen
Lamb is the kitchen's signature, done several ways: a hearty lamb shank baked until falling apart, laced with gravy over mashed potatoes; and seared lamb loin chops brushed with olive oil, garlic and parsley with baby red potatoes and haricot vert. Around them sit Basque Spanish-Basque staples — croquetas, solomo, beef tongue and family-style platters meant for sharing.
The Room
The room feels like a Basque country inn dropped into downtown Boise — wood, white walls, a busy bar up front and a warm dining room behind. It fills with locals, Basque festival crowds and travelers; service is friendly and proud of the heritage on the plate.
Best for a team dinner or family-style celebration
The shareable platters and convivial bar make Leku Ona a natural team dinner or group celebration, while the quieter dining room works for an anniversary with a sense of place.
Not for
Not for diners after delicate, modern plating or a light meal — this is hearty, lamb-heavy Basque country cooking served in generous portions.
