Vamos

Türkbükü — Bodrum, Turkey

Six hectares of olive, lemon, and orange groves — the menemen comes from eggs cracked over wood fire, and the morning light through the trees makes everything taste considerably better than it already would.

Vamos occupies a category that Bodrum has produced only a handful of times: the garden restaurant that becomes a destination in itself. Set among citrus groves and olive trees in Türkbükü, with both indoor and outdoor seating arranged to take maximum advantage of the dappled morning light, Vamos has built its reputation primarily on what it does with breakfast — which is to say, it treats the first meal of the day as seriously as most restaurants treat their final course.

The kitchen is committed to the organic and the seasonal. Eggs are cracked over a wood fire and become menemen — the Turkish scrambled egg dish with tomatoes and peppers — with a depth that supermarket eggs and gas hobs cannot produce. The produce arrives from local farms and the restaurant's own kitchen garden. The Julius Meinl coffee programme is taken seriously. The bread comes from the oven rather than from a box. These are small things, individually, but collectively they represent a philosophy that guests register without necessarily articulating: this is a kitchen that cares.

The breakfast service runs until 2pm, which is the correct decision for a seaside resort town where the first guests rarely arrive before 10am with any real appetite. The menu continues into lunch with salads, appetisers, and mains that include pizzas cooked in the wood-fired oven — described by most reviewers as reliably good. The outdoor tables under the trees are the correct choice on any morning when the weather allows, and in Türkbükü this is most of the summer.

Vamos is priced at a level that reflects its quality without punishing it — the $$$ bracket of the Bodrum peninsula is considerably more expensive than most of Europe, and Vamos occupies the lower end of that range without sacrificing anything essential. The staff is described consistently across reviews as efficient, warm, and genuinely knowledgeable about the menu.

Why it works for a First Date

The morning first date — which is the most honest and the most underrated format — has no better address on the Bodrum peninsula than Vamos. A breakfast date removes the performance pressure of dinner: there is no wine to order incorrectly, no bill to negotiate awkwardly, and the two-hour limit enforced by the approaching afternoon gives the meeting a natural arc that dinner sometimes lacks. The garden setting is genuinely beautiful without being intimidating. The food is the kind that people tend to enjoy without effort. And the morning light through the olive trees is, objectively, flattering to everyone. Vamos is the correct answer to the question of where to meet someone for the first time when you want to make a good impression without making it obvious you are trying to make a good impression.
