Grogue Bar & Grill — Cape Verdean / Grills, Boa Vista
Grogue Bar & Grill takes its name from the sugarcane spirit that is Cape Verde's cultural heartbeat — distilled on Santo Antão and Brava, distributed throughout the archipelago, and consumed with an enthusiasm that speaks to its quality. The bar section here takes the grogue seriously, with a selection of aged varieties and fresh cocktail preparations.
The grill menu is straightforward Atlantic seafood: wahoo steaks, dorado, octopus char-grilled and served with sweet potato, and the inevitable cachupa for those who need warming after a late evening on the water.
The music here — live on Fridays and Saturdays, recorded on other evenings — is Cape Verde's extraordinary musical tradition: morna, coladeira, funaná. The morna in particular, with its melancholic beauty, is the sound that Isabel Dos Santos and Cesária Évora brought to the world and that sounds entirely different heard in Sal Rei than anywhere else.
The grogue flights — a selection of four varieties from different islands and production methods — are an education in the range and quality of Cape Verdean spirits. The staff explain each with obvious pride and genuine knowledge.
Best Occasion: Great for Group Birthdays
Grogue cocktails, grilled fish for the table, live music on weekends, and the warmth of Cape Verdean hospitality. A celebration that requires no planning beyond showing up.
Best Occasion: Works for Team Dinners
The music format naturally replaces conversation during live sets, which is the precise relief that a team dinner sometimes needs. The grogue flights provide a shared tasting experience that generates genuine bonding.
