About Bottega Restaurant

Frank Stitt opened Bottega in 1988, six years after his trailblazing Highlands Bar & Grill, and it remains his most architecturally compelling room. The Highland Park location — a gracious building on Highland Avenue South — houses a dining room of soaring ceilings, warm golden light, and a sense of occasion that operates independently of whatever has brought you to the table. The space was conceived as a celebration of the Italian countryside filtered through Alabama's extraordinary agricultural abundance.

The menu updates daily — Stitt's signature commitment to what is genuinely seasonal rather than what is convenient. House-made pasta arrives in perfect coils, shaped by hand and dressed with ingredients sourced from both the Alabama farms that supply the restaurant and Italian importers who have worked with Stitt for decades. Veal scallopini is executed with the precision of a craftsman who has done it thousands of times and still finds it worth doing correctly. The wine list is emphatically Italian in orientation and deeply personal in curation.

The staff at Bottega understand their room. Service is formal without stiffness, attentive without intrusion, and genuinely knowledgeable about what is on the plate and in the glass. The restaurant's three decades of operation have created a culture of excellence that is self-sustaining — new hires absorb the standard quickly because it is simply the way things are done here.

Bottega is where Birmingham's established figures dine for birthdays, anniversaries, and significant business relationships. It is also where proposals happen. The combination of architectural beauty, impeccable food, and service that understands how to frame an important moment makes it the clear choice when the stakes are highest.

Why It's Perfect for a Proposal

A proposal requires a room that understands what it means to be in a significant moment. Bottega has hosted enough of them to have developed an institutional sensitivity to the occasion. Call ahead and the team will discreetly arrange the table, coordinate with a sommelier on the right champagne, and ensure that the evening's pacing works in your favor rather than against you.

Request a table near the windows or in one of the more intimate corners of the dining room. The warm light flatters. The seasonal menu gives the evening a distinctiveness — you will remember what you ate because the cooking demands that kind of attention. Wear the occasion accordingly: Bottega is a smart-casual room that rewards a jacket. Arrive fifteen minutes early and let the staff know what you have planned.
