About Mina

Mina is a small restaurant — 18 covers — on the Muelle Marzana, the river's Bilbao La Vieja side, facing the Casco Viejo across the water. Álvaro Garrido and his wife Lara Martín opened it in 2006, earned the Michelin star in 2013, and have kept the room intentionally intimate ever since. Reservations are allocated across two seatings, with only two dozen total diners served a night.

Garrido's cooking is a careful updating of Basque fundamentals — a 6-hour-cooked onion, a sea urchin reinterpreted as a mousse with seaweed crackers, a txuleta steak (rare aged Basque beef) served in a minimalist two-slice presentation with smoked salt. The two tasting menus (€110 for six courses, €155 for nine) both end with the signature torrija — a Basque-style bread pudding caramelised with aged txakoli vinegar.

The room feels more like a private dining club than a restaurant — low lighting, dark wood, a single open-pass kitchen. The river view through the full-height windows is best at dusk. The wine list is short (110 references) but includes Spain's rarest Txakoli (Doniene Gorrondona "Itsasmendi" 2019) and a clever selection of biodynamic whites.

Lara Martín runs the floor with a quiet hospitality that feels personal rather than corporate. Regulars are remembered by seat, wine preference, and pace. Service lasts 2.5 hours for the shorter menu, 3.5 for the longer.

Why It's Perfect for First Date

Mina is Bilbao's best first-date room because it is intimate without being claustrophobic. The 18-cover scale means every table is acknowledged but not surveilled. The river view at sunset is one of the city's most photogenic dining frames. The tasting-menu format removes decision friction. The price-point (€110 for six courses) is serious but not ostentatious. And Lara Martín's floor service pitches the evening at the right register of warmth without hovering.
