Sunny Restaurant is one of Bhaktapur's most-recommended restaurants for the proper full-Newari-meal experience. The kitchen serves the city's reference samay-baji set meal in a converted heritage Newari house with original wood-carved windows, traditional Newari-style low seating, and the proper communal-eating format that the cuisine requires.
The signature is the Sunny Special Newari Set ($14 per person). A multi-course samay-baji meal eaten communally over an hour and a half. Components include: chiura (beaten rice, the central staple); choila (marinated grilled buffalo); chatamari (the Newari rice-flour pizza); kachila (raw minced meat with Newari spices); bara (lentil pancake); aalu tama (potato-and-bamboo-shoot curry); soybean stew; mustard-greens curry; juju dhau (the Bhaktapur king-curd dessert); and a small glass of aila (Newari rice spirit). The premium Wedding-Style Set with extra components and an additional yomari course runs $24.
The room is built in heritage Newari style. Original wood-carved window frames preserved from the 19th-century building, low-set tables with floor cushions in the side galleries, traditional brass dinnerware and clay-pot serving vessels. Capacity is fifty across the building. The full meal is eaten communally; servers explain the proper order (start with chiura, add choila and chatamari, finish with juju dhau) for first-time visitors.
Walk-ins work outside Nepalese-festival peaks; reservations are useful for groups of six or more. The restaurant accepts cards and the staff speak strong English; the menu is in English and Newari with detailed dish descriptions. The kitchen is open lunch-and-dinner with a quieter mid-afternoon service.
Best Occasion Fit
For impressing visiting international clients with a serious cultural set-piece dinner, the heritage-house setting and the formal multi-course Newari structure are unusually evocative. Birthdays. The multi-course samay-baji format is properly celebratory and the staff will arrange a small song with notice. As a first date with food-curious partners, the unfamiliar Newari cuisine and the eating ritual give the meal a built-in narrative.
