About Royal Door Restaurant

Royal Door Restaurant operates from a converted Malla-period courtyard building near Bhaktapur's Durbar Square. The city's most-formal Newari dining destination. The restaurant serves Newari royal cuisine: the formal multi-course Newari banquet that the Malla kings of Bhaktapur (1482-1769) ate, with components and serving rituals codified by the royal palace kitchen and preserved by Newari-cuisine historians.

The signature is the Royal Newari Banquet ($25 per person). A sixteen-component meal eaten communally over two hours, served on traditional brass platters. Components include: bhuti masu (royal goat curry with Newari spices); aila-marinated grilled buffalo; the formal samay baji presentation; chatamari with three different toppings; bara with three different fillings; yomari with savoury and sweet variations; juju dhau king-curd; an aila-tasting flight of three regional Newari rice spirits; closing chiya (Newari milk tea). The premium Royal Wedding Banquet runs $40 per person and includes additional components and the formal Nepalese rice-and-flower offering.

The room is the architectural set-piece. The Malla-period courtyard building has been preserved with original wood-carved roof beams, hand-painted Newari religious-art murals, and a central courtyard used for the multi-course meal service. Capacity is forty across the building plus a small inner-courtyard for outdoor dinners in the dry season. Reservations matter for the multi-course banquets. One week ahead minimum.

What makes Royal Door the right impressing-international-clients answer rather than just a good Newari restaurant is the formal-banquet structure and the royal-cuisine narrative. The Malla-period setting, the multi-component meal pacing, and the cultural-set-piece work all read as serious to non-Nepalese guests in a way the more casual Newari rooms don't.
