About Cafe Nyatapola
Cafe Nyatapola is one of Bhaktapur's most-photographed dining destinations. The restaurant occupies a small two-storey converted Newari-traditional building in Taumadhi Square, the plaza dominated by the towering Nyatapola Pagoda (the five-tiered 1702 Hindu temple that is one of Nepal's most-iconic religious structures). The restaurant's upstairs windows give continuous views of the pagoda and the surrounding Newari-architecture houses.
The menu is the Newari classics for tourist-friendly presentation. Samay Baji Set ($8). The traditional Newari multi-component plate with beaten rice (chiura), grilled buffalo choila, spiced lentils, soybeans, mustard greens, and a small portion of egg. Yomari ($3 each). The festival-style steamed-rice dumpling with sweet chaku-jaggery filling. Bara ($4). The lentil-flour pancake, served with a small dipping sauce. Choila Set ($6). The spicy grilled-buffalo plate with rice and dal. Bhaakaah Wa ($3). The Newari fried-dough-with-coriander snack. A meal of samay baji, choila, and yomari for two runs $20-30.
The cafe runs a strong breakfast service (most travellers arriving from Kathmandu eat breakfast here). Chiura-and-yogurt with seasonal fruit, Nepali milk tea, and a small Newari pastry plate ($5-8). The lunch service runs from 11:30am to 3pm and the dinner service from 5pm to 9pm.
The room is the architectural set-piece. The upstairs windows face the Nyatapola Pagoda directly across the plaza at sixty metres distance, and the dining tables along the window seating give continuous views of the temple and the pilgrimage activity in the plaza below. Walk-ins always work outside Nepalese-festival peaks; the queue at lunch can run twenty minutes when groups of tourists arrive simultaneously.
Best Occasion Fit
First dates. The Nyatapola Pagoda view is one of Asia's most architecturally evocative dinner settings, and the Newari-cuisine introduction gives the meal cultural depth. Birthdays. The upstairs window seating and the multi-course samay-baji format are properly celebratory. Team dinners with visiting colleagues. The format absorbs four to eight without complaint and the architectural setting gives the dinner a built-in postcard moment.
