About Beans The Coffee Shop

Beans The Coffee Shop is one of Bhaktapur's most-popular cafes. A small two-storey converted Newari-traditional building right at the edge of Durbar Square (the central royal-palace plaza). The cafe's prime location gives the upstairs windows continuous views of the 55-Window Palace, the Lion Gate, and the Bhaktapur royal-palace complex. The restaurant's reputation is built equally on the quality of the coffee programme and the location.

The menu runs across three layers. Coffee to Nepali pour-over filter coffee (using beans from the Ilam region), espresso, cold-brew, and a small Nepalese-spiced chai variety ($2-4 per cup). Newari-Western Fusion plates. Newari-style buffalo-momo with cilantro chutney, Nepali-style bao-buns, and a small selection of Western breakfast plates (eggs, oatmeal, French toast) ($5-9 per plate). Pastry. House-baked croissants, scones, cinnamon rolls, and small Nepalese sweets like sel roti rice-flour rings ($2-4 per piece).

The room is small but well-arranged. Sixteen tables across two indoor floors plus a small streetside outdoor section that opens onto Durbar Square's pedestrian flow. The upstairs window-seats are the prime tables (with the palace view); walk-ins for two work outside the morning rush 8-10am. Cards are accepted; the staff speak strong English; the menu is in English with Nepali translations.

What makes Beans worth the visit beyond the location is the consistency of the coffee. The staff are trained baristas (most have national barista-competition experience) and the brand uses single-origin Nepalese beans roasted at a small Kathmandu roastery. For travellers building a Bhaktapur day around the city's UNESCO architectural heritage, this is the morning anchor.
