The Verdict
Charmgang opened in late 2021 in a converted shophouse in Talat Noi — the historic Sino-Thai quarter just north of Chinatown — and has become the standard-bearer for what young Thai cooking looks like in the post-pandemic era. The three founding chefs — Mo Suetrong, Khalid Sriwattanasubha, and Thanin Veerawatkanont — met at Bo.lan, the late lamented Thai chef restaurant of Duangporn Songvisava and Dylan Jones, and brought that kitchen's commitment to ingredient sourcing into a more accessible, neighbourhood-priced format.
The menu changes constantly but the core philosophy holds. Curries are built on hand-ground pastes from heirloom chillies and small-farm produce sourced from specific provinces. The rice is always single-origin. The seafood is bought daily from the riverside Bangrak market. The signature curries — particularly a southern Thai gaeng som with sea bass — show technique that would be remarkable at any price point and is extraordinary at the ฿800 entry.
The room is small, casual, and openly chef-driven — the three founders move between the kitchen and the dining room throughout service. The wine list is built around small-production natural wine that handles Thai spice well, with strong showings from Loire and Australia. The cocktail programme uses Thai spirits and fresh-pressed juices. The Michelin Guide awarded a Bib Gourmand in 2023 and the Asia's 50 Best organisation has named Charmgang to its Discovery list every year since opening.
Why It Works for First Date
Charmgang is the perfect first-date restaurant for a couple who care about food more than ceremony — the room is informal, the food is serious, and the setting in Talat Noi makes the entire evening feel like a discovery. For solo dining, the counter is one of the most welcoming in the city. For a team dinner where the goal is bonding rather than client-impressing, the family-style sharing format and the friendly room are unbeatable.
