La Terrasse — French / Malian, Bamako

La Terrasse claims the best riverside position in Bamako. A wide, open terrace suspended above the Niger River that catches the evening breeze and the full spectacle of West Africa's great waterway. Pirogues cross below, egrets fish in the shallows, and on clear evenings the opposite bank glows amber in the setting sun.

The cooking is French-inflected Malian. Brochettes of lamb with herb butter, grilled fish in lemon-garlic sauce, a chicken yassa that splits the difference elegantly between its Senegalese origin and French bistro form. The kitchen knows its limitations and stays within them wisely.

Sunset at La Terrasse is among the genuinely great West African dining moments. The light on the Niger as it moves from gold to pink to deep violet is unhurried and spectacular. Arrive at 6pm and plan to stay until the stars are visible.

The beer list features Flag and Castel, both local and reliably cold. The cocktail menu is adequate rather than inspired. The wine list is short and overpriced in the way that wine invariably is in landlocked Sahel cities.

Best Occasion: Perfect for Proposals

A Niger River sunset viewed from a private terrace corner. One of West Africa's most unexpectedly romantic settings. The staff are practised at providing champagne at the right moment.

Best Occasion: Great for First Dates

The setting does the conversational heavy lifting. Even the most awkward first date finds its rhythm watching a Sahel sunset over the Niger. Arrive early and let the evening develop naturally.
