About La Mirande

La Mirande sits directly at the foot of the Palais des Papes, inside a 13th-century building that was once the palace of Cardinal de Berry and that the Stein family — a Swiss hotelier dynasty — restored as a small 5-star hotel in the late 1980s. The gourmet restaurant, Le Restaurant, occupies the original Salle Cardinalice (the 14th-century cardinal's dining hall) and spills out into the hotel's enclosed garden with a direct view of the Palais des Papes' northern wall. The restaurant earned its first Michelin star in 2019 and a Green Star in 2020, retaining both through the 2026 Guide.

Chef Michele Donvito is Italian-born, trained in Alba and at the Georges Blanc three-star in Burgundy, and cooks a menu that combines Italian structural ideas (the idea of a pasta course at the centre of a tasting menu) with pure Provençal produce. Signature dishes include a wild asparagus with Provence honey and aged balsamico (spring only), a langoustine with Carpentras black truffle (December–February), a pigeon from a named Luberon producer with reduced lamb jus, and a dessert of Ventoux lavender mousse with candied lemon. The format is a choice of three-, five-, or seven-course tasting menus.

The dining room seats 40 across the interior Salle Cardinalice (the restaurant's atmospheric heart — vaulted ceiling, original 14th-century stonework) and the enclosed garden terrace (May–October service). Service is led by director Yves Pouget, formerly of the Ritz Paris, and the wine list runs to 900 labels with a Provençal and Rhône backbone. The sustainability programme that earned the Green Star includes an on-site kitchen garden, zero-waste policy, and a fully organic charcuterie programme.

The three-course lunch is €90; the five-course tasting is €140; the seven-course Grand Menu is €230. Pairings are +€110 for the house flight or +€170 for the Grand Flight. The attached hotel (27 rooms, five suites) makes the restaurant a convenient destination stop.

Why It's Perfect for Proposal

La Mirande is the Avignon proposal restaurant. The 13th-century dining room with the Palais des Papes framed outside the window is the most singular romantic setting in Provence. Reserve the garden terrace for the 7.30pm sitting in May–October (the Palais is floodlit at 9pm, exactly when dessert arrives); book the interior Salle Cardinalice November–April for the candlelit vaulted-stone atmosphere.
