About Le Calamar

Casey Wall built his name in Sydney and New York before turning a Bouldin Creek corner into Austin's most convincing French wine bar. Le Calamar opened in the former Underdog space at 1600 South 1st Street and landed in the 2025 MICHELIN Guide for the USA within its first year. The cooking is bistro French bent toward Texas appetite: a four-course prix fixe at $77, a raw bar stacked with oysters, and a wine list that does the heavy lifting.

The Kitchen

Wall trained in serious kitchens in New York and Australia, and the menu shows that polish without the stiffness. His chicken wing a la Koffmann is the dish people come back for: a boned-out wing stuffed with chicken breast, sweetbreads and huitlacoche, a sly Texas-Mexican wink at a Pierre Koffmann classic. The gnocchi Parisienne arrives with a crisp brown crust and a herb-and-butter sauce, and the oysters are widely called the best in the city.

The $77 four-course prix fixe is the smart way in, but the a la carte raw bar, steak tartare and wagyu hold up on their own. Partners Richard Hargreave and Claudia Lee run the floor and the wine program, which leans toward low-intervention bottles that flatter the food rather than upstage it. For a room this young, the cooking already feels settled.

The Room

Le Calamar is a small Bouldin Creek bistro a few minutes south of downtown, with a marble-topped bar, close-set tables and warm, low lighting. The mood is intimate and conversation-easy, busier and more animated at the bar than in the dining nooks. Service is sharp without ceremony, and dress is smart-casual in classic Austin fashion. Seating is limited, which is part of why prime weekend tables move fast.

Best for a First Date

Book Le Calamar for a first date because it does intimacy without intimidation. The bar is built for leaning in over oysters, the $77 menu keeps the bill predictable, and the wine list gives you something to talk about. Not for

Not for a big celebratory group. Le Calamar is small and bar-anchored, so a party of eight will feel cramped, and the kitchen is built for couples and pairs rather than banquets.

Frequently Asked

Is Le Calamar worth it?

Yes. Casey Wall's French bistro is one of the best new tables in Austin and made the 2025 MICHELIN Guide in its first year. The $77 four-course prix fixe is strong value for cooking at this level, the oysters are a city benchmark, and the wine list rewards curiosity. Go for the prix fixe and add a few raw-bar plates.

How hard is it to book Le Calamar?

Moderately hard for weekend prime time. Reservations run through OpenTable, and the Friday and Saturday slots between seven and nine go first. Weeknights and earlier or later seatings are easier, and walk-ins can sometimes find a bar seat. The restaurant is at 1600 South 1st Street in Bouldin Creek, just south of downtown Austin.

What is the average meal price at Le Calamar?

The four-course prix fixe is $77 per person before drinks. Add oysters, steak tartare or a wagyu supplement and a couple of glasses, and most diners land between $110 and $160 a head. The a la carte raw bar lets a lighter eater spend less. Wine, chosen well off the low-intervention list, is where the bill can climb.

What should I order at Le Calamar?

Start with oysters, often called the best in Austin, then take the chicken wing a la Koffmann, a deboned wing stuffed with sweetbreads and huitlacoche. The gnocchi Parisienne and steak tartare are reliable, and the $77 prix fixe bundles the highlights. Let the floor steer you to a low-intervention wine that fits the table.

Is Le Calamar good for a first date?

Yes, it is one of the better first-date rooms in Austin. The bar seating encourages conversation, the lighting is warm, and the fixed price removes any awkwardness over the cheque. It is intimate without being stuffy. For more options, see our first-date dining guide.
