About Launderette
Chef René Ortiz opened Launderette in 2015 in a converted 1960s laundromat in the Holly neighbourhood, a part of East Austin that was still finding its identity when the restaurant arrived. The Michelin Guide recommended it. The space is genuinely beautiful: terrazzo floors, vintage fixtures, a covered patio with lights strung between the trees, and a dining room that manages warmth and buzz simultaneously. The menu draws on global flavours — Mexico, Japan, Spain, France, the Middle East — filtered through Ortiz's specific sensibility and the produce available from Central Texas farms.
The Setting & Atmosphere
Launderette occupies a space in East Austin that reflects exactly what the restaurant is trying to be: global new american done with conviction and without apology. The neighbourhood context matters here — East Austin's energy and unpretentiousness permeates the experience.
Signature Dishes
The kitchen's signature is In-House Bread / Global Seasonal Menu. The menu at Launderette operates with a clarity of purpose that most restaurants spend years trying to achieve: every dish is here because it belongs, not because it fills space. The result is a focused, memorable experience where the food rewards attention rather than demanding it.
Why Launderette for First Date
Launderette works for first date because it understands what the occasion requires. Reservations are available and recommended, particularly on weekend evenings. The global new american format naturally creates the conditions for intimacy and discovery.
Practical Notes
Reservations via Reserve on Resy are strongly recommended and book out quickly on weekend evenings. Parking in East Austin is available nearby. Dress code is Austin casual to smart casual — the restaurant will not enforce formality, but the occasion rewards making an effort.
