About Vezene

Vezene occupies what was, until recently, a car repair garage in Metaxourgio — a neighbourhood on Athens' creative frontier, where urban gardens grow from former parking lots and galleries occupy industrial shells. The restaurant's transformation of the space preserves the bones of the building while layering in warmth: exposed concrete softened by olive wood furniture, hanging herbs from the ceiling, and a kitchen that opens fully onto the dining room.

Chef Sotiris Evangelou trained in some of Greece's most serious kitchens before returning to Athens with a conviction that the country's ingredients — outstanding lamb from Crete, Aegean octopus, Santorini fava, mountain herbs from Epirus — deserved cooking as precise as any Mediterranean tradition's finest produce. His menu refuses the category of 'Mediterranean cuisine' in favour of something more specific: the flavours of Greece's distinct regions, cooked with contemporary attention.

The lamb preparation is the kitchen's centrepiece: shoulder slow-cooked for eight hours with dried oregano and garlic, served over a purée of split peas from Santorini, with a reduction of the braising juices so concentrated it borders on sauce bordelaise in its depth. The octopus — wood-grilled over vine cuttings, served with fava and smoked paprika oil — is the version against which all other Greek octopus is measured.

The wine list focuses on Greece's finest producers: Domaine Sigalas, Gaia Wines, Tetramythos, and Avantis Estate alongside a short but intelligent international selection. The natural wine section, curated by a sommelier who spent three years in Georgia's wine regions, is exceptional.

Best For: First Date

First Date: The neighbourhood's creative energy, the food's conversation-generating novelty, and the room's warmth create conditions where first dates extend naturally into second drinks. The cooking is distinctive enough to remember the evening by.
