Miss Kim — Korean / American, Ann Arbor
Miss Kim is the project that James Beard Foundation took note of — Chef Ji Hye Kim's deeply personal Korean restaurant that applies Michigan sourcing and her grandmother's recipes with equal seriousness. The result is Korean food that could only exist in Ann Arbor while remaining unmistakably Korean.
The banchan — the small dishes that precede a Korean meal — are made with Michigan kimchi using local napa cabbage fermented in the restaurant. The sourcing is integrated into the cultural form rather than imposed on it.
The bibimbap, the doenjang jjigae (fermented soybean paste stew), and the ssam (lettuce wraps) demonstrate a kitchen that knows Korean food from the inside rather than as a category to execute.
Chef Kim's James Beard nominations have brought national attention to what Ann Arbor regulars have known since the restaurant opened — this is the kind of personal, culturally grounded cooking that the best American restaurants produce.
Best Occasion: Great for Birthdays
The banchan spread, the bibimbap, and the communal Korean eating format make Miss Kim the birthday dinner where the format is the celebration.
Best Occasion: Perfect for First Dates
The banchan creates instant sharing. The Michigan kimchi provides a specific conversation. Chef Kim's story provides the context. First dates at Miss Kim have substance.
