Sufra

The Verdict

Sufra occupies a restored 1930s villa on Rainbow Street — the Jabal Amman ridge road that has become the city's cultural-cafe corridor over the past two decades. The restaurant has been open since 2007 and is now the most established and most consistently recommended Jordanian-specific kitchen in the country. It is where Amman takes visiting diplomats who want to actually eat Jordanian rather than hotel-Lebanese.

The menu is organised around the national dishes done properly. Mansaf — the Bedouin lamb-and-jameed rice — is available in a full ceremonial presentation with a two-day lead time. Makloubeh — the 'upside down' rice cake with lamb, chicken, or vegetable — is turned out tableside at dinner service. The mezze section is drawn from both Jordanian and broader Levantine traditions, with particular attention to the Jordan Valley's own vegetable programme: grilled zucchini with pomegranate, fattoush with sumac from the Ajloun hills, bread from the in-house saj.

The dining rooms split across the ground floor of the villa and a terraced garden that opens in summer. The décor is traditional — mashrabiya, low copper lamps, hand-loomed rugs — without tipping into pastiche. Service is warm and knowledgeable; the senior staff can explain the Jordanian dishes' regional origins at whatever level of detail the table wants. Dinner with a Jordanian or Lebanese wine runs JOD 40 per person.

Why it works for First Date

For a first date in Amman, Sufra is the correct answer. The Rainbow Street location is walkable and gives both parties something to do before and after. The cooking is specific to the place without requiring background knowledge. The pacing is unhurried. And if the date goes well, the restaurant is exactly the kind of 'our place' that becomes a fixture in a relationship.
