El Portal Alicante

El Portal opened in 2012 on Calle Bilbao in Alicante's old town and became, almost immediately, the most influential restaurant the city has produced in the last fifteen years. It is a modern taberna in the Spanish sense — a long marble bar, a restaurant section at the back, a seafood display that turns over several times a day, and a wine list that reaches into serious Jerez, Galicia and Rioja territory.

The room is photogenic in a way that has been widely copied across Spain. Art-deco lighting, a glass-case seafood counter, an aged-meat display, a cocktail bar, a dining room that seats perhaps eighty when full. The energy is urban rather than touristic; lunch service runs to the city's law and finance crowd, dinner attracts a younger, more dressed-up clientele.

The menu is a serious modern-Spanish reading of the taberna repertoire. Gillardeau oysters arrive with a champagne mignonette; a hand-cut beef tartare comes with Oscietra caviar; the croquetas — of jamón and of a rotating monthly special — are widely agreed to be the best in Alicante. The kitchen also runs a short but sophisticated section of aged-meat plates.

A full dinner with wine lands at €65–95 per head. It is unusually easy to assemble a team dinner here — the menu absorbs six, ten, fifteen people without complaint, the volume handles the conversation, and the reservations desk is practiced with groups.

El Portal is the team-dinner workhorse of Alicante. The taberna format gives a group of eight or ten a natural, convivial shape — shared platters, individual orders, a wine list that rewards exploration without punishing a generous host. The aesthetic is photographed endlessly on Instagram, which makes it the kind of address visiting colleagues remember. It is fun without being loud, and serious without being stiff.
