The Verdict
LalQila is the Souq Al Wakrah's Indian and Pakistani seafood house — an underrated programme that takes the Gulf's native fish species (hamour, sheri, sha'ari) and reworks them through the tandoori and curry repertoires of Lahore, Karachi, and Hyderabad. The restaurant opened in 2020 and has become a quiet critical favourite among the Qatari-resident South Asian expatriate population.
The signature dishes are the tandoori prawns (king prawns marinated in yoghurt and Punjabi spice, then clay-oven-fired), the Hyderabadi fish dum biryani (a layered rice dish with saffron and mint and a whole grilled fish under the seal), and the Karachi-style fish karahi (a wok-cooked fish curry with roasted tomato and green chilli). The biryani requires forty minutes of cooking and is ordered in advance — the menu warns of this.
The dining room is modestly decorated — hand-painted LalQila (Red Fort) murals on two walls, warm amber lighting, conventional wooden tables. Dinner runs QAR 160 per person. The service is bilingual in Urdu, Arabic, and English; the kitchen handles Jain and strictly-vegetarian modifications fluently.
Why it works for First Date
For a first date — particularly where at least one party is from the Indian subcontinent or is culturally familiar with the regional seafood traditions — LalQila is the correct answer. The menu creates conversation about regional preferences (who prefers Karachi spice, who prefers Hyderabadi style). The pacing is unhurried. And the Souq location means the evening can extend into a walk along the promenade afterward.
