The Verdict
Danat Al Bahar BBQ Fish is the flagship seafood kitchen inside Souq Al Wakrah — the restored traditional market complex that is the cultural and dining centre of the town. The restaurant operates on the 'select-your-fish' model: the morning's Gulf catch is laid out on ice at the entrance; diners pick the specific fish (hamour grouper, sheri emperor, sha'ari snapper, red mullet, prawns), specify preparation (whole grilled, salt-crust, pan-fried), and then move to the terrace or the indoor dining room to wait.
The accompaniments are classically Qatari: mandi rice (cinnamon-and-cardamom rice slow-cooked with lamb stock), machbous (spiced rice with meat or fish), a chunky tomato-and-onion salata daqqa, and the Qatari fresh-herb breads from the adjacent bakery. A squid ink mandi — an in-house signature — is worth ordering if available.
The terrace faces the Souq's restored harbour inlet and the waterfront promenade. The acoustics are informal and the pacing relaxed — a full dinner will run close to two hours because the fish is cooked from raw only after ordering. Prices are among the Gulf's best-value for fresh-catch dining: a whole grouper with rice and salad lands at QAR 220 per person.
Why it works for Team Dinner
For a team dinner — particularly when the team has been in Qatar for meetings and has already done the Doha fine-dining circuit — Danat Al Bahar is the correct change of register. The cuisine is specifically Qatari. The Souq terrace provides a photograph-worthy setting without being expensive. And the select-your-fish format scales to groups of any size with no additional complexity; the kitchen prepares each order individually.
