Copacabana

The Verdict

Copacabana is the Souq Al Wakrah's Brazilian churrascaria and the most animated of the Souq's dining rooms. The format is the standard rodizio: servers circulate with sword-skewered cuts of beef, lamb, chicken, and pork from the open grill, and each diner turns a green-side-up / red-side-up table marker to signal readiness for the next cut. A serious buffet salad bar — around thirty items — runs alongside.

The meat programme is better than the format's casual positioning suggests. The picanha (the Brazilian cut of sirloin cap) is aged in-house and grilled with a rock-salt crust. The cordeiro (lamb) is marinated overnight in chimichurri. The linguiça is made in-house to the chef's grandmother's recipe from Minas Gerais. The accompanying farofa, black bean feijão, and deep-fried plantain slices are all serious rather than buffet-casual.

The dining room is large — the largest in the Souq — and holds around 180 covers, which makes it the default choice for groups of eight or more. A full rodizio dinner runs QAR 280 per person, which in the Gulf is exceptional value for the meat programme.

Why it works for Birthday

For a milestone birthday — a fortieth, a fiftieth, a return-from-expatriation — Copacabana's rodizio format is the correct answer. The theatre of the tableside carving keeps a larger group in collective focus. The continuous flow of cuts means no plates arrive at different times. And the buffet salad bar accommodates dietary restrictions across any group size without kitchen stress.
