The Boat Club at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake

Lakefront Steakhouse & Seafood $$$ The Lodge at Whitefish Lake — Wisconsin Avenue, Whitefish

The only lakefront restaurant in Whitefish. Premium steaks, regional seafood, live music in the lounge three nights a week — the Boat Club is the resort table on the lake.

The Restaurant

The Boat Club is the signature restaurant of The Lodge at Whitefish Lake, the four-star Averill-family resort that occupies the southwest shore of Whitefish Lake at 1380 Wisconsin Avenue, two minutes by car from downtown Whitefish. The dining room is the only lakefront fine-dining restaurant in the valley: floor-to-ceiling windows on the lake side, a deck that hangs over the marina in summer, timber-frame architecture, and a wood-burning stone fireplace at the centre of the room that anchors the winter atmosphere. The Boat Club opened with the Lodge in 2006, has held the same kitchen leadership through its first two decades, and has won the Taste of Whitefish for its plated entrées and the Best Happy Hour in Whitefish for the adjoining lounge programme.

The cooking is American steakhouse with regional Pacific Northwest signatures. Mains run prime-grade beef — filet mignon, ribeye, New York strip, a 24-ounce bone-in ribeye for the table — alongside a wood-grilled Alaskan halibut, a pan-roasted Columbia River steelhead, a Cervena venison loin, and a herb-crusted rack of lamb. The kitchen also runs a serious appetiser programme: a Pacific Northwest seafood tower, a charcuterie and cheese board, a steak tartare with truffle oil, and a French onion soup served in an iron crock. The wine list is broad — about two hundred and fifty references — with strong Napa, Walla Walla, and Willamette Valley benches and a fair selection of well-priced bottles for the lakefront crowd.

Service is warm and capable; the dining room manager and head sommelier have both worked the property for over a decade. The lounge — a separate space adjoining the main dining room — runs a happy-hour menu from eleven each morning and a live-music programme three nights a week (typically Thursday through Saturday), giving the Boat Club a working day-into-night arc that few mountain-town dining rooms match. The deck seating in summer books out for sunset two to three weeks ahead, and the winter window-side tables, with snow on the marina and ice on the lake, are the most-requested seats in the valley between Christmas and Presidents' Day weekend.

Primary Occasion

Why This Is Whitefish’s First Date Pick

The Boat Club is the Whitefish first-date room because the setting carries half the evening on its own — lake, mountains, sunset deck in summer, snow-and-fireplace dining room in winter — and the kitchen handles a careful three-course meal without making a production of it. The menu is approachable, the wine list has real range without being overwhelming, and the lounge next door gives the date a graceful second act for a nightcap and a song. It also serves cleanly as a proposal venue — the deck two-tops at sunset on a July evening are among the most photographed dining seats in northwest Montana — and as a small birthday with the lakefront window-side seating that the staff are skilled at decorating without theatrics.
