The Druk Hotel has been operating on Thimphu's Clock Tower Square since 1977 and the Yak Restaurant is its historic main dining room — the oldest continuously-operating serious restaurant in the kingdom. The room is on the ground floor, wood-panelled in the classic 1980s Bhutanese hotel style, with traditional thangka paintings, woven wool rugs, and low-hanging brass lanterns that anchor the atmosphere. The Druk was the kingdom's first serious hotel and the Yak's reputation predates every other dining room in Thimphu by at least a decade.
The kitchen sources extensively from the Druk family's own organic farm in Paro — the same sourcing principle the Taj later adopted. Red rice, high-altitude vegetables, dairy products, and meats all trace back to the farm, which was the first organic commercial operation in Bhutan. The menu is split between traditional Bhutanese and international Continental, and the Bhutanese section is unusually strong for a hotel restaurant — the kitchen team has been working with these ingredients for decades, and the refined-but-authentic balance is harder to achieve than the either-or extremes. Signature orders include the yak meat stew, the traditional momo platter, and the red rice with seasonal Bhutanese vegetables.
The occasion fit is broad. For first dates, Yak works because the room has warmth and conversation-scale acoustics without the ceremonial pressure of Chig-Ja-Gye or the commute-distance of Babesa. For birthdays, the hotel's age and history carry a quiet gravity. For impressing visiting clients, the organic-sourcing story gives the dinner something beyond the menu to talk about. For team dinners, the dining-room layout accommodates groups of six to ten well along the central tables. The Druk's Clock Tower Square location is also the city's most walkable — many diners are staying elsewhere in central Thimphu and walk home from dinner, which is a small but real daily-quality-of-life advantage.
Reservations by phone through the hotel or via WhatsApp. The restaurant rarely fills on weeknights — bookings 1-2 days out are usually sufficient outside peak visitor season. Request a corner table for the best conversation setting. The Bhutanese tasting menu is available on request but is not the default format — à la carte ordering works well across the menu.
Best for First Date
Yak Restaurant has the combination a Thimphu first date needs — historic room, conversation-friendly acoustics, broad menu that accommodates uncertain ordering, organic-sourcing story for gentle talk, and the Clock Tower Square location that makes the walk home part of the evening. The Druk's age gives the room a warmth newer hotel restaurants can't manufacture.
