About Adega

In December 2015, Chef David Costa and Pastry Chef Jessica Carreira opened Adega on Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose's East Side neighborhood. Ten months later, the Michelin Guide awarded it a star — the first and only Michelin star ever given to a restaurant in the city of San Jose. The name means "wine cellar" in Portuguese, and the wine program lives up to that etymology: over 200 vintages rarely seen outside Portugal, curated with the same obsession that drives the kitchen.

The dining room seats 36 people, and the intimacy is not incidental. Costa and Carreira built a restaurant that rewards focused attention. The cooking centers on pristine local California produce married to top-quality imported Portuguese ingredients. Seafood is the kitchen's great subject — bacalhau (salt cod) appears in various iterations, each one treating Portugal's most beloved ingredient with the reverence it deserves. The menu changes with the seasons, following both what California's farms offer and what resonates in the Portuguese calendar.

What makes Adega extraordinary is the combination of formal achievement and genuine warmth. This is not a cold room executing cold technique. The service is knowledgeable and personal, the pacing considered, and the overall experience carries the specific satisfaction of having been looked after by people who care deeply about what they do. For business or for romance, for a birthday or a proposal — Adega is the address in San Jose where the occasion rises to meet the food.

The private dining option accommodates groups who want the full Adega experience away from the main room. Given the restaurant's national reputation, reservations are essential — book through Tock, as far in advance as possible for weekend evenings.

Why Adega is Perfect for Impressing Clients

A reservation at Adega communicates something that no other restaurant in San Jose can convey: that you are the kind of person who knows where the city's single Michelin star lives, and that you take your guests seriously enough to bring them there. In Silicon Valley, where everyone has eaten at the latest Michelin darling in San Francisco, having a local table of this caliber is genuinely impressive. The intimate dining room, the 200-bottle Portuguese wine list, and the unimpeachable quality of the food create precisely the combination of distinction and comfort that makes business meals here so effective. This is also the table for a proposal or an anniversary that needs to feel genuinely exceptional.
