The Verdict

Hosa opened at the Jio World Plaza in BKC in 2023 with a singular ambition: to take South Indian cuisine out of the strictly vegetarian, temple-town register that has dominated its presentation in north India and to build a fine-dining format that respects the full breadth of the cuisine — coastal Karnataka seafood, Andhra biryanis, Kerala backwater ferments, Tamil Chettinad spice work. Chef Suresh DC trained at Trishna and at the now-legendary Karavalli at Bangalore's Taj before taking the executive chef role at Hosa.

The menu is a tour of the South. The seafood section draws on Mangalore and Udupi traditions — a kane fish curry from a single specific Karnataka village, a butter pepper crab from a Konkan recipe, a fried prawn neer dosa with toddy-shop coconut chutney. The biryani section includes regional variants from across South India — Andhra, Hyderabadi, Ambur — each prepared in dum style on the day. The chutney programme alone has more than twenty rotating preparations.

The room is one of the most beautiful Indian fine-dining spaces in Mumbai — a heritage-tile floor, brass-edged tables, traditional South Indian textiles, all assembled by designer Ashiesh Shah. The cocktail programme uses South Indian spirits — Goan feni, Kerala coconut wine — alongside a serious wine selection. From ₹3,500 the value is excellent for a fine-dining format of this calibre and the lunch tasting menu in particular is among the smartest mid-day offers in the city.

Hosa is one of Mumbai's most sophisticated team dinner restaurants — the family-style sharing format works perfectly for small groups, the private rooms accommodate parties of up to twenty, and the cuisine has the broad accessibility that group dining demands. For a first date, the room is romantic and the menu is genuinely interesting. For a birthday with extended family or friends, the format is unbeatable.
